Understanding drainage symptoms

A slow sink on its own points somewhere different from several fixtures backing up. A gully that overflows only during rainfall raises a different question again. Looking at which outlets are affected, and when, helps narrow down where a restriction or fault may lie.

  • Affected outlets: one sink or toilet, several fixtures, or an outside drainage point.
  • Timing: continuous, after another fixture discharges, or only during rain.
  • Material: suspected wipes, grease, leaves or another known obstruction.
  • Current condition: slow drainage, backing-up, overflowing wastewater or loss of use.

Rainwater drainage symptoms

Gully overflow during rainfall

A gully that overflows during rainfall may have a blocked inlet, sediment within the gully, a downstream restriction or insufficient drainage capacity. Visible leaves do not rule out a deeper problem.

Symptoms to report

Gurgling waste pipework

Gurgling can occur with restricted flow, ventilation faults or changes in trap seals. It is more useful when considered alongside slow drainage, odour or backing-up.

Guide information
  • Whether the noise occurs alone or with slow drainage, backing-up or odour.
  • Whether nearby fixture use changes the noise or water level.
  • Whether there is actual wastewater backing-up or overflow.

Symptoms to report

Several fixtures draining slowly

Several fixtures draining slowly can indicate a restriction in shared pipework. The pattern helps narrow down the affected section but does not identify one definite cause.

Guide information
  • Fixtures affected and whether they appear to share a branch or stack.
  • Whether symptoms change when another fixture or appliance discharges.
  • Whether wastewater is backing up or overflowing, and whether facilities are out of use.

Symptoms to report

Water backing up when another fixture drains

If water appears at one outlet when another fixture discharges, the two may share drainage downstream. That behaviour can help narrow a restriction to a branch, stack or drain.

Guide information

  • Which other fixtures appear to share the same branch or stack, if known.
