Blocked Toilet enquiry

A blocked toilet can be caused by a local obstruction in the pan or a restriction further downstream. We check the fitting and connected drainage before choosing the clearance method. Repeated flushing into a rising bowl can turn a blockage into an overflow.

Local or downstream

A toilet can be blocked at the pan or by a restriction in the connected drainage further downstream.

Suitable clearance equipment

Toilet-specific equipment is used where ordinary drain rods could damage the fitting or push an object further in.

Pan blockages and downstream restrictions

The toilet trap and curved outlet can hold paper or a solid object close to the pan. If a shower, bath or another toilet also backs up, the problem may be beyond the fitting in a shared pipe. Ordinary outside drain rods are not suitable for forcing through a toilet pan.

Clearing the toilet without causing more damage

The equipment needs to suit the ceramic fitting and the obstruction. A solid object may need retrieving rather than being driven further into the system. Chemicals already present also affect the precautions required before mechanical work.

Checking connected fixtures afterwards

Once the toilet is clear, we use controlled flow checks and look at any other affected outlets. If a shower still rises when the toilet is used, the shared drainage needs further investigation rather than another local attempt at the pan.

Blocked Toilet: common questions

Should I keep flushing a blocked toilet?

No. Stop flushing if the water is rising because more water can cause the bowl to overflow.

Can a toy or other solid object be pushed into the drain?

It is usually better to retrieve a solid object where possible. Pushing it further can lodge it in a harder-to-reach section.

Why does the shower rise when the toilet is flushed?

The toilet and shower may share a restricted downstream pipe, with wastewater appearing at the lower outlet.

Can ordinary drain rods be used through a toilet pan?

Ordinary outside drain rods can damage the pan or fittings. Toilet clearance needs equipment suited to the curved passage and ceramic finish.

Is boiling water suitable for a blocked toilet?

No. It adds more water to a restricted bowl and does not address a blockage further downstream.
