Drain Rods enquiry

Drain rods can clear some accessible outside drains but are not suitable for every pipe or obstruction. We assess the access and likely pipe layout before rodding, particularly where earlier attempts have stopped at the same point.

Rod couplings

Assembly and permitted rotation depend on the design of the particular rod system.

Persistent resistance

A repeated stop can indicate a bend, obstruction or pipe defect rather than a need for more force.

Rod couplings and correct rotation

Different rod systems use different joint designs, so assembly and rotation should follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Incorrect handling can loosen a coupling and leave a section trapped in the drain.

What persistent resistance can mean

A rod that repeatedly stops may be meeting a bend, solid obstruction, damaged joint or change in the pipe. More force can make the problem worse. A trapped tool also needs assessing before more equipment is introduced.

When another clearance method is better

Flexible cable equipment can suit smaller waste pipes, while water jetting may be better for deposits along a larger drain. Rodding is a clearance method, not a survey of the pipe wall, so recurring problems can still justify camera inspection.

Drain Rods: common questions

Should all drain rods be turned the same way?

No. Rotation should follow the instructions for the particular rod coupling design.

What if a rod becomes stuck?

Stop forcing it. Its position and a suitable retrieval method need to be assessed.

Can ordinary drain rods be used through a toilet pan?

They may damage the pan or fittings. Toilet-specific equipment is more appropriate.

Does a rod passing through prove there are no cracks?

No. Rodding is not a condition survey of the pipe wall.

Can a detached rod be recovered?

It may be possible, but the position and suitable access need to be established before more tools are introduced.
