Blocked soil stacks and back court gullies
Many older Glasgow tenements have cast iron soil stacks and rainwater pipes on the rear elevation. Branch pipes from individual flats connect into the main stack, with underground drains and gullies serving the back court.
A blocked soil stack can cause wastewater to back up through lower connections. A blocked gully may leave water standing around the back court, drying green or basement entrance. These symptoms can look similar from outside, but the obstruction may be in a different part of the drainage system.
Older pipework can also contain deposits at bends, changes of direction and junctions. Establishing whether the blockage is in a branch, stack, gully or underground drain helps determine the clearance required.
Drain unblocking for shops and commercial kitchens
Glasgow shops, cafes, takeaways and commercial kitchens can experience blocked sinks, slow drainage and overflowing gullies. Ground floor business premises beneath tenement flats may also connect to drainage shared with residential properties.
Fat, oil and grease can accumulate inside kitchen waste pipes and larger drains. Food debris and other material can contribute to the obstruction. Scottish Water identifies unsuitable items flushed down toilets and fat, oil and grease entering sinks as major causes of blocked drains and sewers.
Commercial drain clearance may involve removing kitchen fat and grease build-up from the affected pipework. Where blockages recur, the location and likely cause are useful when considering whether cleaning or further investigation is needed.
Road gullies, private yards and drainage outlets
A blocked road gully is different from a blocked private drain. Glasgow City Council is responsible for drainage on local roads, while gullies within private back courts, yards and car parks are generally matters for the relevant property owners.
Business yard drainage can connect to a foul sewer, surface water sewer or watercourse. In Scotland, some discharges to the water environment require SEPA authorisation, while trade effluent discharges to a public sewer require the appropriate permission or agreement. NetRegs guidance on discharges to water and sewer explains the distinction.
For a blocked yard drain, identifying the affected gully, nearby inspection chambers and connected outlets can help establish the drainage route.
